June update: Studio update, Daniel Avery Essential Mix, Rhonda in Toronto and BNCC in Brooklyn

Hello friends. I know it’s been a while but rest assured that I’ve been spending that time working on new music. The reason it’s taking time is because I want it to be incredible and there is no sense in rushing when you are aiming to make timeless music. That being said, the last month or two have been very productive and I hope to get something out in the next few months. Here’s a little sample of what I’m working on. You can find other samples on my FB page as well.

Secondly, I was honored to find that Daniel Avery used an edited version of my song “Solstice” for this recent BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix!
You can listen to the whole thing here. IT’s great from start to finish.

Thirdly, I was asked to come play some music at the next A Club Called Rhonda which touches down in Toronto this Thursday for a full-hotel takeover at the Drake!

Lastly, I am really excited to get back to NYC! I’ve heard nothing but great things about Bassa Nova Civic Club and the residents (John and Volvox) are both excellent DJs. It’s also my first time playing on Independence Day. Well stoked!

February Update

Great times in Calgary and Vancouver this week. Much love to everyone that showed up to both! Now heading to LA for a couple of weeks including some adventures in the desert.

I am also very happy to announce that I will be returning to Europe in early April including the legendary Traouw which will be closing for good later this year.

March 1 – Montreal @ TBA
March 21 – Toronto @ TBA
April 4 – Utrecht – Ekko (live set)
April 10 – London – Corsica
April 11 – Amsterdam – Traouw w/ Iron Galaxy & Audio Culture DJs
More TBA

This song was one of the highlights of this trip so far:

I was recently told that my blog sucks.

And it’s kind of true. And I mean, who actually visits artist websites anymore when you have so many social media sites to get your stalk on? Ok, I do. And I guess YOU do too. (hello btw)

Things that happened recently:

Boiler Room finally took place in Toronto in November and they decided to make it a 3024/Dovercourt themed party so it included label-boss Martyn B2B Gingy, Kevin McPhee, Egyptrixx (he lives on Dovercourt), Basic Soul Unit (we just included him because he’s a boss), Bruce Trail and myself. It was actually a really fun party, which, in Toronto is not always the case. Here’s my set. Shout out to all my friends who make cameos/tried to kiss me/gave me drinks/danced awkwardly for the camera/got wasted.

And the tracklisting:

Nautiluss – Zero Gravity
Metro Area – Detroit (C2 Mix)
Roman Flugel – Cookie Dust
Boston B – Housecall
Funkinevil – Igno
2 AM/FM – Poison Dart
Daniel Avery – Naive Response
Jimmy Edgar – Mercurio
LFO – Freak
DVA – Walk It Out
Helix – Whooosh Ice Dispenser
Kelela – Bank Head
Jam City – Melty Valve

Here’s my Resident Advisor chart for January:

*Nerd section* I’m going to get technical for a second. If you are bored by this stuff please skip or risk becoming a bit nerdier. I finally feel like my modular is reaching it’s potential lately. My most recent acquisitions being Intellijel Metropolis & Dual-ADSR. The Metropolis is a very sick sequencer which amongst other things has built-in quantized scales. It really makes it simple to come up with interseting melodies. I can also control my Korg Mono/Poly with it. I also got a Make Noise Maths which is a staple in most modular setups. Maths is based on Buchla-style function generators and really adds some flair to modulation over time. Here’s a photo:

Next things:

I’ve been patiently working on the next Nautiluss EP. If you’ve heard my briefly-on-soundcloud song “Slew”, it will be along those lines. Not sure where it will end up yet but I’ll keep you posted.

I’ve also been working on some really futuristic-sounding club tracks for a very exciting new label. It remains to be seen whether it will see the light of day as Nautiluss or perhaps a new alias…

I’ve got a few shows coming up in Western Canada including a return to one of my favorite clubs in Canada (Hifi). I think I’ve played there over 10 times in my career. Also, playing at the legendary Open Studios in Vancouver with a bunch of nice people. Both cities are dear to my heart and I’m greatful to be getting back out there.

Feb 5 – Calgary AB @ Hifi Club
Feb 7 – Vancouver BC @ Open Studios
Mar 1 – Montreal QC @ TBA
April – Europe tour

Winter Solstice

I am happy to announce that I have a new EP coming out next week (December 9th) on a relatively young Dutch label called Audio Culture including limited-run Pink Marbled vinyl for all your old-fashioned record players.

Also, I’m DJing at The Drake Hotel as part of their annual “What’s in the box” series on December 26th. They wisely gave me the closing slot so I will be playing for roughly 2 1/2 hours which is perfect because there’s nothing worse than only getting an hour to play 5-8 minute long songs!

WITB Night 1: Nautiluss + Brendan Phillip + more

Fill your Boxing Week void with WHAT’S IN THE BOX, our mini music fest that’s five nights, five bands + five bucks!

Fake Art Records presents:
Nautiluss / 11PM
Brendan Phillip / 10PM
Beta Frontiers / 9PM
Prince Innocence / 8PM

September is my favorite month

Hello you beautiful people. I am clearly terrible at keeping this updated. Truth be told, I’ve been putting a lot of energy into making music and sometimes I forget to look up and update people on what’s going on.

First off, I have a few shows coming up:

September 5 – Boston MA @ DJing at Middlesex Lounge for Make It New. Lookinb forward to it esp since my last show in Boston was great times.

September 14 – Hamilton ON @ Supercrawl w/ Egyptrixx & Ikonika.
I will be doing some sort of live set with all my own music for this one.

Secondly, I am days away from receiving test presses for an upcoming EP on a yet-to-be-disclosed but awesome Dutch label! There will be a beautiful 12″ as well as digital releases.

Thirdly, XLR8R just gave away my remix for my pal Physical Therapy coming out soon on Grizzly. I tried to channel some of my earliest electronic influences into this one especially UK hardcore and early D&B. Grab it here! Speaking of remixes, I also did one for Perera Elsewhere which is coming out on Friend of Friends in a few weeks. More on that later.

Physical Therapy – White Label (Nautiluss Remix) on XLR8R.

May things

Helloooooo internet. Happy to say that I’ve got a bunch of shows coming up next weekend. Looking forward to doing some North American dates again! Started thinking I was relegated to Europe forever. I’m also finishing some new records, so more news on that very soon.

Last weekend, I recorded a DJ mix using strictly vinyl that emphasizes late-night afterparty vibes. Enjoy.

May 2013 dates
May 17th – Boston @ MiddleEast (Basement) – Together Festival w/ Duke Dumont, Bordello and Doctor Jeep (fb)
May 18th – NYC @ Cameo (Basement) w/ James Friedman & Paul Raffaele (fb)
May 19th – Vancouver @ Imperial for the Bass Coast pre-party w/ Max Ulis, Librarian and more (fb)

Dovercourt EP

Today’s the day!

I’m very proud to be a part of this compilation with a some of my favorite producers from around the way in Kevin McPhee, Gingy and Bruce Trail. A huge thank you to Martyn and Erosie for putting this out into the world. It’s an honor to join this already legendary record label. Here’s a description by the man himself.

Over the last year I’ve traveled to Canada frequently for gigs and got to know the small but healthy electronic music scene there. Cities like Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto have brought forth many established artists over the past few years, such as Egyptrixx, Azari & III, Basic Soul Unit, Jacques Greene, Lunice and Sixtoo, but 2012 has seen a new breed of no-nonsense house and techno producers come up via labels like Turbo Recordings and Naked Lunch.
This “Dovercourt EP” features four very talented producers: Kevin McPhee, Nautiluss, Gingy and fresh face Bruce Trail. Their tracks are a dedication to their hometown of Toronto. Being removed from the house/techno epicentres of Berlin and London, these four are much less interested in what’s fashionable or trendy, and more in bringing us straight to the point, no frails jacking house music. I’ve been playing these four extensively in my DJ sets, and I hope you will too. So out to Toronto, this one’s for you! Enjoy.

Best of 2012 mentions

Wow. Believe me when I say that I really didn’t see any of these coming. The sheer amount of good music that comes out in one year is so overwhelming to me that to be considered at years end by anyone for anything is truly something I ever could have imagined. Many of the artists/releases I am listed with are favorites of mine and so I’m honored. Anyways, enough with my oscar speech.

On XLR8R, I made Best New Artists at #6, I made the Best Releases list with my Habitat EP at #14 (between Andy Stott and Daphni no less) and Depth Charge made #34 on the Best Tracks list.

On Earmilk, two of my songs made their Best Dance Tracks list.
